Freestanding or In-Cupboard Kitchen Bins?

The right bin can help transform your kitchen into a clean, cohesively designed space that exudes style and function. There are countless kitchen bins to choose from depending on your requirements, with the two main options being freestanding and in-cupboard bins. Both kinds of bin have advantages which we set out here to help you decide which is most suitable for your space. So how do you choose the best bin for you? How to Choose a Freestanding or In-Cupboard Bin? When it comes to choosing a bin for your kitchen, there are several things to consider. Where you position your bin obviously depends on the space you have to work with and the layout of your kitchen. The positioning of your bin will impact practicality; you’ll need to factor in how accessible the space is and whether it’s big enough to fit a larger capacity bin to ensure you don’t have to empty it every other day and can sort recycling easily. The style of your space and whether you want a completely hidden option or discrete tucked away bin may also steer your decision. Freestanding bins can be tucked away discreetly while offering a visually-appealing option that can work as a design feature in its own right. Alternatively, an integrated in-cupboard bin is the perfect solution if you want to free up floor space and keep a totally streamlined look. We explore the benefits that each of these options offers, along with some great models available here at Binopolis. Freestanding Bins We have slim bins and low bins to tuck away into compact spaces, but what if you can’t hide your bin away? Then you might as well have one that looks great! Designers have risen brilliantly to the challenge of creating bins that you’ll be happy to have on display. After all, the kitchen bin is often as visually prominent as your bar stools or chairs, so the models we sell have been as carefully designed as any other piece of furniture. Large Capacity Freestanding Bins If you have limited cupboard space or smaller cabinets, an in-cupboard bin might not be the most practical option. In this case, a freestanding bin would make the ideal choice. Freestanding bins are available in numerous sizes that can offer plenty of capacity, even when you choose a single compartment bin. The iconic Wesco Pushboy 50L bin is a particularly good option for those seeking a freestanding bin. It looks brilliant in modern and retro interiors, offering a sleek style along with a premium design. This model is available in a variety of stunning colours and also comes in a smaller 22L option. The Brabantia Bo Touch is another especially stylish freestanding range that makes a chic addition to any kitchen. The wide-opening touch lid and durable inner bucket contribute to a highly-functional bin, making waste disposal look good. Two and Three Compartment Freestanding Bins If you’ve decided on a freestanding bin but want further options to manage waste recycling, a multi-compartment bin is the way to go. Having numerous buckets or compartments in one place means you can easily sort food waste and different kinds of recycling as you dispose of it, helping you stay organised. We have an extensive range of two-compartment and three-compartment freestanding bins with favourites like the Brabantia Bo and Bo Hi Touch bins, the Wesco Big Boy range and Joseph Joseph three-compartment Totem bins. In-Cupboard Bins For those that have limited floor space or just want to free up some extra space, an in-cupboard bin may be the preferable option. Integrated in-cupboard bins can be incorporated into new kitchens during the design process or retro-kitted into existing cabinets to create the perfect hidden waste solution. Hidden bins can help your kitchen retain a streamlined look as they’re completely out of sight while also offering the bonus of keeping pets out! In-cupboard bins can work with pull-out or hinged doors and come in various sizes suitable for different kitchen cabinets, with shorter under-sink options available, ensuring you can find the right bin for your kitchen. In-Cupboard Bin Sizes & Capacities Even if, initially, you think you don’t have enough cupboard space to devote a bin to, there are plenty of options to help transform your space. A narrow 300mm cabinet can easily house a multi-compartment recycling bin. You may be surprised by how much waste storage capacity such a bin can offer. The Wesco 300AZ is a brilliant example of this, as it discreetly tucks away two waste compartments with 42L behind a small door that might have offered limited storage otherwise. If you do have the room for a larger bin, there are plenty of options to help maximise your space. You can find a range of bins suitable for cabinets that measure 300mm, 400mm, 450mm, 500mm or 600mm with up to more than 100L available. For a comprehensive look at some of the best bins for 600mm cabinets, you can read our useful buying guide. Some notable models include the ECO and Vauth Sagel Es-Pro. You will also find options to help make use of those tricky under-sink spaces, with height and depth measurements suitable for fitting around plumbing and in a more compact space. The popular Wesco Pullboy-Z style is available in a shorter model, perfect for cupboards beneath a sink. In-Cupboard Bin Compartments Like freestanding bins, in-cupboard bins can offer numerous compartments, providing further options for sorting waste and recycling. Various models will accommodate two, three or four separate compartments and caddies that are easy to remove and clean and will maximise your waste organisation. Many home cooks will enjoy the convenience of removing a food waste caddie from the large unit to have on hand while they are cooking so they can swipe waste into it as they go. The Hailo Euro Cargo four-compartment bin is designed to be as efficient as possible, with two 38L buckets, one 12L bin and one 2.5L container all hiding behind one cabinet door. This is ideal for large families or households that produce a lot of waste and recycling. The 12L bin also comes complete with its own lid and is an ideal size for food waste. Specialist In-Cupboard Bins In-cupboard bins are not exclusive to full-height cabinets. As already mentioned, integrated bins can fit under sinks, but you can also find options for pan drawers and inset worktop bins. These are ideal for kitchens that are already making full use of entire cabinets. Pan drawers tend to be wise and low in height, making them a great location to put an in-cupboard bin. Our bins for pan drawers are designed to sit in a base tray, which houses several compartments and lids to ensure everything stays firmly in place and can be cleaned with ease. The Tecnoinox Technobig recycler is a great example of how drawer space can be maximised like this. With our great range of both freestanding and in-cupboard bins, you’re sure to find the perfect waste management solution for your kitchen. If you have any questions about which size or style bin is right for you, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with the Binopolis team; we are always happy to chat through your options. You can also read our buying guide to kitchen bin sizes for a clearer idea on how to select the correct bin.

Vauth-Sagel in-cupboard kitchen bins: new extended range

We have extended our range of Vauth-Sagel built-in bins to provide you with more choice than ever before. Perfect if you want to keep your bin hidden behind closed doors and make the most of your cupboard space, premium German brand Vauth-Sagel’s integrated bins are easy to fit into existing kitchen units or can be incorporated into a new kitchen scheme.  All our Vauth-Sagel bins are available with free next-day delivery. The extended range of Vauth-Sagel bins now features an incredible selection of models, with options for most cabinet sizes and cater for individual waste and recycling requirements. The range includes models for 300mm, 400mm, 450mm 500mm and 600mm cabinets and with a minimum fitting depth of 470mm; 476mm or 515mm.  The lower height bins (470mm high) typically fit below a drawer (or possibly shallower sinks) and have sliding lids to provide extra space for storage. The larger capacity and taller bins are 570mm high, fill most of the cabinet height and have a fixed lid that can also be used for storing liners.  In line with the trend for darker coloured kitchens, we have introduced Vauth-Sagel’s new Lava Grey colour, which also looks stunning when contrasted with white and wood-effect kitchens. This colour is a slate-toned shade and the most accurate image we have of the colour is this one above left, showing the warmer tone to it which is very attractive. This new colour is proving extremely popular. The Vauth-Sagel range explained Now that the range is large, here we break down the different choices available. The range gives customers a choice of options to fit different: a) cabinet widths, from 300mm to 600mm. These widths are measured on the outside of the cabinet door, and are the starting point for choosing your bin - check the internal cabinet width against the width given in the product details. If you have an inframe cabinet, give us a call if you'd like any advice on fitting an integrated bin into it, as adjustments will be needed. b) cabinet depths - choose from either 470mm, 476mm or 515mm depths. 470mm deep products have a sliding lid whilst the 476mm and 515mm deep models have fixed lids. The  515mm products make the most of the extra depth in some of the European made kitchens, giving more capacity for the increasing number of deeper cabinets coming through.  c) cabinet heights -  The VS Pro 470mm high bins can typically fit below a drawer or possibly sink (but check the plumbing!!), and have sliding lids for easy access to storage. The VS Envi Space Pro XX (formerly Oeko XX Liner) 570mm high bins fill most of the cabinet height and have a fixed lid which can still be used for storing liners etc. d) colour - The Vauth-Sagel range has up until now been produced in one colour, Silver Grey, which has platinum colour steel frames and lids, and paler silver grey inner bins. This colour will continue in all models. Now a new darker 'Lava Grey' shade has been introduced, which is a warm slate-toned shade. This has been cleverly matched across both the metal and plastic parts of the bin. The products are exactly the same as the Silver Grey, with the only difference being the colour. Combining excellent build quality with user-focussed design, Vauth-Sagel bins are solidly made, function superbly and are easy to fit, which makes them incredibly popular with consumers and our trade customers. We’re delighted to be able to extend our Vauth-Sagel offering, and we love the range because our customers find the fitting template and videos allow them to fit a top quality integrated bin to a professional standard.  The 50 year old family business is one of the leading suppliers of premium products to the kitchen industry, producing their own ranges of Integrated bins and cabinet shelving systems and creating parts and fittings for many kitchen manufacturers including SieMatic for their high-end ranges. Vauth-Sagel also produce precision parts for BMW, Lamborghini and Volkswagen, so quality and design precision are assured. With our new expanded range, there is sure to be a Vauth-Sagel integrated bin which will work with your new kitchen scheme, but hurry because stocks are getting low, so that’s an added incentive to start your new year resolution to get the recycling organised…see the new range here

Brabantia's New-Icon super stylish kitchen pedal bins

Step up your style with newIcon bins from Brabantia, in three new on-trend colours of Daisy Yellow, Clay Pink and Moss Green. The stunning newIcon bins not only look great, but also boast a generous 30-litre capacity in a space-efficient tall slim shape. Calm, soothing Moss Green, soft and beautiful Clay Pink, and happy Daisy Yellow will add a touch of colour to your kitchen this season, and we also have ever-popular Almond and super-stylish Platinum if you’d like a more neutral effect. At £60.00 these bins are a good value way to refresh and tidy your kitchen and are built for years of intensive, problem free use. You could even put two or three together to create a recycling station: use different colours to identify different contents, or use all the same colour bins with added labels. The new colours work well together as a set. Why newIcon? Brabantia have called these bins newIcon simply because they are new Icons in their range: intended as future classics which will be as much loved as the former tall slim pedal bins. The lid shape on the newIcon bins is gently rounded, a shape which is half-way between the flat lid on the previous classic pedal bins, and the domed shape of the retro-styled pedal bins including our Orla Kiely designs. The lids not only look good but are also uniquely smooth and quiet in use, thanks to superior soft-close functionality and a new easy and light pedal operation. This lid is also odour-proof when shut, to prevent any unpleasant smells seeping into the kitchen. The removable plastic inner bucket is easy to clean while the smart grip in the lid hinge makes it easy to move the bin around the room. Brabantia say “Since 1953, we have made over 50 million pedal bins. All this expertise, we’ve now put into our newIcon pedal bin. A sustainable bin, with the best ever design, usability and value for money. Our best bins ever.” Eco-friendly This iconic styling is combined with impeccable eco credentials. The newIcon pedal bins are made from 40% recycled materials while 98% of the bins’ packaging is recyclable, as is the actual bin once it reaches the end of its lifespan.  And when you buy a newIcon bin from Binopolis, Brabantia will make a donation to The Ocean Cleanup, which develops advanced technologies to rid the world’s oceans of plastic. They have invented a network of extremely long floating barriers which let the ocean gather the plastic using its own currents. An array of barriers could theoretically remove about half the Great Pacific Garbage Patch in 10 years. A prototype of the barrier is currently being tested in the North Sea.  So support the Ocean Cleanup and treat your kitchen to a fresh new look with a brilliant Brabantia newIcon bin: see them here

Binopolis - the best place to shop for kitchen bins, recycling bins and in-cupboard bins

We believe in smart, problem-solving designs brought to you with great service. We're working with leading interiors PR agency Homestyle PR, so that as many people as possible can get to know about Binopolis and our fantastic choice of products. Homestyle put us in the spotlight on their blog recently and gave us the opportunity to share our passion for well-designed, top quality bins. They asked:  Why do you think bins are often seen as an afterthought in home design? Unfortunately, kitchen bins tend to be treated by retailers as a cleaning product and they are often displayed next to the mops and irons, or even alongside wheelie bins. Therefore, the bin has historically been viewed as a necessary but undesirable utility product, with most people managing with one bin for everything and keeping it out of sight. How is Binopolis changing this? We believe that the bin is an essential kitchen accessory and should be given as much visual and functional design consideration as other kitchen appliances and even furniture. We started Binopolis because we couldn’t find any good-looking recycling bins on the market. Our website provides customers with designs that offer a smart solution to separating and storing recycling in the kitchen. And we've chosen our favourite single bins too. What can you offer customers who visit your website? Our website offers a fantastic selection of recycling and single bins, all from top brands that have been chosen by us to give customers the best choice of designs that suit their individual needs and style. The site is designed to be customer-friendly, with the products set out clearly to make the buying process simple. Our customer service team is happy to offer friendly, expert advice and we offer fast, flexible delivery that is free for all orders over £45. What are the most important things to consider when choosing a bin? Firstly you need to think about the quality. Our bins have features that set them apart from the rest such as quiet soft-close lids, pedal mechanisms that are engineered for years of use and are made with extra thick anticorrosion steal that is coated in superior colour finishes or fingerprint proof coatings.  Style is also important, as bins can be beautiful! From sleek, minimal shapes, to fun retro designs, our bins are designed to be seen and make a positive addition to your space. It’s always worth considering how much waste your bin is going to need to hold. This may depend on the size of your household, how much you tend to throw away or recycle or how often you want to empty it. Some customers choose the largest bin they can find, but for those with compact kitchens, we have a new range of slim-line and built-in designs. Which freestanding bins can you offer people who are looking for more from their bin? For customers that are looking for more style, we have the quiet and discreet Simplehuman bins. For more character, there’s the Wesco vintage-style and Brabantia Orla Kiely patterned bins. Or for more flexibility, the multi-funtional Joseph Joseph Totem and Stack bins, or the innovative Sensor bins should tick all the boxes. Which colour bin is your most popular?  When it comes to our top-selling colours, beige and white are equally popular. We have also seen an increase in the desire for ‘new-neutrals’ such as grey, black and mint, as they are versatile, yet timeless. Which situations would you suggest a built-in bin could be used for? Integrated in-cupboard bins are a fantastic solution for customers that want to maintain a clutter-free kitchen or to free up some floor space. They can also be a very effective element when it comes to planning the workflow in a kitchen as they can be positioned near food prep areas or even under the sink for added convenience. How could your bin purchase affect the way in which you run your home? When customers are following a recycling scheme, they can produce a surprisingly high volume of recyclable packaging, plastic bottles, cans and glass that needs to be separated from other household waste. This can result in teetering piles of recycling by the back door, or multiple containers in different places in the home. With our innovative designs, a dual or triple recycling bin can often be fitted into the same floor space that used to be occupied by one rubbish bin, which will help you to keep the recycling and waste sorted and tidied away. For larger families and offices, a set of two or three bins can be aligned together to form a recycling station. As one customer put it, ‘the neatness of tidying everything away in the right places has transformed our kitchen and put an end to arguments over whose turn it is to do the rubbish’.  Since we started working with us in January, Homestyle PR have certainly been helping us to reach more customers through features in The Times and The i newspapers, plus magazines including Essential Kitchens Bedrooms Bathrooms (EKBB), the current issue of House Beautiful, Good Things and Great British Food gourmet magazines and interior design publication Fabric.  See Homestyle's blog and see more of our press coverage in our press area.

A Review of the Wesco Pushboy review available in over 12 colours!

"The moment I fell in love with a bin" by style blogger Daisy at Pretty Green Tea! Daisy Hatami writes about interiors, travel, food and fashion on her highly individual blog Pretty Green Tea. We love keeping an eye on her eclectic styling and love of colour, so when we found out that she loves 1950’s and vintage design. We thought she’d be the perfect person to review a colourful Wesco Pushboy bin for us. The Pushboy 50L comes in over 12 stunning colours and Daisy chose the Turquoise version as it works beautifully with the warm yellows and oranges in 1950's homeware.  We’re delighted that not only did she enjoy using it and testing it at home, but she fell in love with it too. Here’s her review: “Last October I was standing in a department store in Berlin and spotted a collection of rainbow bins in the distance. I went in for a closer look and found that they were a collection of retro style bins by the brand Wesco. They were colourful, appeared to be of a high quality (German products usually are) and had that 50s style that I love so much. It’s true, that was the moment I fell in love with a bin. So, when the friendly folk over at Binopolis got in contact and asked if I’d like to review a bin from their collection I jumped at the chance. I was already aware of Binopolis because I’d been eyeing up the wonderful collection of Wesco bins on their website since my last trip to Germany. Some people might think it’s a little over the top to get excited about a bin. I disagree. My aim over the next few years is to buy less and instead invest in high quality items for my home (with my next move in mind) which I believe are going to last. A bin is used on a daily basis and can take up a large space in the kitchen.  Therefore, I think it’s important to have something that not only looks good but is also built to a very high standard. I don’t want to go out and replace my bin every year, which I’ve been doing each time I’ve moved in the last few years (4 times – wasting money and adding to landfills). I much prefer to buy once and ensure it’s going to last. I picked out the Wesco Pushboy in Turquoise and I can confirm that it’s a real beauty. It’s a 50 litre bin which is perfect for a family sized kitchen. My Pushboy takes prime place in my kitchen and adds a good burst of colour to the room. The bin flap is very easy to push open and pop rubbish into the bin. It swings back into place and firmly locks in odours. It’s also to easy to wipe over and keep your bin looking spotless. I particularly like the stainless steel handles on the side of the bin. They make it very easy for you to lift the bin off and you’re then left with the stainless steel container inside. You then remove the rubber band (prevents the bin bag from falling down) and simply lift it out. Wesco bins are made in Germany form durable stainless steel.  The Pushboy is the original Wesco bin but they now have many other shapes, sizes and styles within their collection. After a month of using my Wesco bin I’ve noticed that it has an industrial quality to it and yet still looks fab in my kitchen. It’s easy to use, very sturdy and the rubber band which prevents the bin bag from slipping down into the bin is a game changer. The colourful and timeliness style of this bin helps to brighten up my flat. I know it’s going to fit right in with our next move too. Binopolis not only stock Wesco bins but a whole host of stylish, quality and functional bins. The website is a pleasure to use and the team behind Binopolis are focused on offering quality customer service, saying: ‘Having satisfied customers is critical to us. There’s no great mystery to ‘customer service’. We like to be treated fairly and with respect when we buy things, so we adopted the same principles for serving our customers’.  I’d like to thank Binopolis for giving me the opportunity to review my dream bin. I’ll be more than happy to answer any questions you may have about it”.  It’s well worth visiting Pretty Green Tea for the full review and many other great ideas and product tips from Daisy.

Wesco Big Double Boy: A great looking kitchen recycling bin

'Buy it nice or buy it twice' was a key World Earth Day message this year. Buying less but choosing well means you can avoid the throwaway culture caused by cheaply built products. Products are also discarded after a short life when they have built-in planned obsolescence: designed to have a limited life or always destined to be replaced by a new version which renders them obsolete. Our products have a long product lifespan which is the opposite of planned obsolescence: they are designed and built to last and in particular Simplehuman, Brabantia, and Wesco confidently cover their bins with 10 year guarantees, with spare parts available if any component needs replacing in order to extend the life of the product. So buying any Simplehuman, Brabantia or Wesco Recycling bin gives double earth-friendly benefits: firstly to make it easy to sort your recycling in the kitchen and to help you collect recyclable paper and card, plastic, cans and glass, and secondly by investing a little more in a quality product it will give you years of use and not end a short life as landfill. The Wesco Big Double Boy recycling bin is a supremely solid product, weighty and strong in best quality steel. It also looks fantastic with its gently curved stainless steel lid contrasting against the glossy powder coated colour finishes: clean White, subtle Almond, rich Red and chic Black. The pedal detailing and Wesco badge bring authentic Wesco styling to the bin but the design works well in contemporary kitchens as well as in vintage interiors. It will look great and function perfectly for many years, the soft-close lid won't clang and the two compartment inner buckets are durable and easy to use with hand-grips for easy removal and liner-securing features. The Wesco Big Double Boy Recycling bin is available for free next weekday delivery. See the product range here, order with confidence from Binopolis and start recycling in style.

Small act, global impact - using one of our kitchen recycling bins is a great start

How do you make a tenuous link between bins, Christmas and penguins? It's simple... Start recycling with one of our bins. Use it to make it easier to sort out your tins, paper, card and plastic bottles and packaging from your rubbish. Collect the recyclables in bins from your local authority, who should sell the valuable commodity material such as aluminium, glass, paper and plastic to be recycled. Plastic is in the news because the swirling islands of plastic waste in the Pacific Ocean are beginning to affect the Antarctic ocean. The polar seas were until recently considered to be still free of pollution but this has now changed. It's true that the Arctic and Antarctic oceans seem unconnected to us in the UK, but recycling is a small daily effort with a global impact. If the plastic bottles you collect over Christmas and into 2015 are recycled, they could be used to make: polyethylene bin liners and carrier bags more plastic bottles flooring and window frames building insulation board phone covers and CD cases fencing and garden furniture water butts, garden sheds and composters seed trays fleeces fibre filling for sleeping bags and duvets office accessories more packaging   If plastic is kept out of the seas and used to make new products and materials instead, this will protect the habitats of both sea and land animals including penguins, polar bears and all of the other polar animals now featuring on our Christmas cards. Tenuous links made.

Find the right size of kitchen bin for your needs

What size bin for a family of four? What capacity do I need? We always try to help customers work out which bin to buy, and the best method we've found is to work backwards from your wheelie bins! Here's how... The way to start is to work put how much waste you generate by answering these questions: 1. What size wheelie bin do you have? It’s probably either 240L or 120L in size – or you may have one of each.  (A 240L wheelie bin typically measures 100cm high and 55cm square; a 120L version is again 100cm high but 40cm square.)  Traditional dustbins are typically around 100L. 2. How quickly do you fill it? 240L If you fill a 240L wheelie bin each week then you are generating around 30L of waste a day – with probably 20L or so of this generated in the kitchen. If you empty your kitchen bin every 2-3 days then you need a bin that will take around 40-50L of waste. 120L If you half fill a 240L wheelie bin or fill one 120L bin each week then you are generating around 10-15L of kitchen waste a day – and emptying your bin every couple of days means you need a 20-30L bin. 3. What if you need to Recycle? Sorting your recycling and waste at the throwaway stage in the kitchen really does make the whole process much easier.  You’ll probably find that you generate more paper and plastic for recycling than rubbish. Our smallest Recycling bin is 22L (with 2 x 11L compartments) and then they increase in size through 30/33L to our mid-sized bins.  These are 46-48L and have splits such as 30L & 16L or 24L & 24L and our largest recyclers have 2 x 30L compartments.  You can match these compartment sizes to your total volumes of recycling and waste. 4. Need more than one 60L bin? If you need more capacity then take a look at our Recycling Sets which go up to 120L. Even if space is limited, you can use 2 or 3 slim, narrow footprint bins lined up together. 5. Food waste If you need or want to keep your food waste separate you can use a worktop bin. These are great for putting in food scraps while you’re preparing meals, or washing up. Even if you have a kitchen caddy provided by your Council, our simplehuman Stainless Steel or Hailo coloured worktop bins look a million times better in your kitchen. We hope these ideas have helped, but it's even better if we can hear about your needs, so do give us a call if you need help deciding what size of bin is best for you. See our Buying Guide to Bin Sizes for more information.
